1986-1988 BAALBEKS
Το καλοκαίρι του 1986 είδα σ' ένα περιοδικό µια
έγχρωµη φωτογραφία του ναού του Baalbek και
αποτοίχισα τους ρόδινους τοίχους ενός καµµένου
σπιτιού στα Μελίσσια. Το αλλοιωµένο από τη φωτιά
χρώµα, τα κατακόρυφα ίχνη από τα τρεξίµατα
της βροχής και ένα υπόλειµµα ζωγραφισµένης
φρίζας µε παρέπεµπαν στις κατακόρυφες κολώνες,
στα ανάγλυφα και στα χρώµατα όπως περίπου
αποδίδονταν στη φωτογραφία. Έτσι άρχισα
το Baalbek, ένα έργο που δεν αναφέρεται
στα πραγµατικά αρχιτεκτονικά χρωµατικά στοιχεία
του πραγµατικού ναού, αλλά στα «πλασµατικά»
στοιχεία της φωτογραφίας και αυτά,
χρησιµοποιηµένα µονάχα σαν πληροφορίες, αφού
η µορφή του έργου συγκροτήθηκε αποκλειστικά
από την εικόνα που έδινε η υλική επιφάνεια. Όταν
το έργο άρχισε να εξελίσσεται, τα εξογκώµατα και
η πτύχωση του υλικού απαίτησαν προσθήκη
µε έντονο όγκο, ικανό να συνυπάρξει µε τον όγκο
της αποτοιχισµένης επιφάνειας.

During the summer of '86 I saw in a magazine
a colour photograph of the temple of Baalbek and
I stripped (by the process of "strappo") part of
the surface of the pink walls of a burnt house
at Melissia. The colour, altered through the effects
of the fire, the vertical streaks from the rain and
the remains of a painted frieze are reminiscent
of the vertical columns, the reliefs and colours
approximately as they were rendered in the
photograph. It was in this way that I started Baalbek,
a work unrelated to the real architectural elements
and colours of the temple, but rather to the
«imaginary» elements depicted in the photograph
and these, utilized only as motivating information,
since the form of the work arose exclusively from
the images given by the surface materials. During
the development of the work, the protuberances and
the undulating texture of the material necessitated
the addition of a powerful volume capable of co-
existing with the volume of the stripped surface.
